The Common Conditions Service offers professional healthcare advice and treatment for eight common illnesses—directly through your local pharmacy.

How it works:

  • Visit us: If you suspect you or your child has one of the eight conditions listed below, simply walk in or pre-book a consultation at Ballyhooly Road Pharmacy.

  • Get a diagnosis: Our pharmacists will complete a clinical consultation to assess your symptoms.

  • Receive treatment: Following an HSE-designed protocol, we will provide self-care advice. Where appropriate, we can also supply specific prescription-only medicines—saving you a trip to the GP.

Please note: If your symptoms fall outside the inclusion criteria for these specific conditions, we may safely refer you to another healthcare professional.

8 Common Conditions

  • Infective Conjunctivitis

    Age criteria: 6 months and over

    Often called 'red or pink eye', this contagious infection causes bloodshot, swollen, itchy, and gritty-feeling eyes. It may also produce pus that crusts and sticks to the eyelashes.

  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI) in women

    Age criteria: 16-64 years

    Usually bacterial, this bladder infection causes a sudden and frequent urge to urinate. Symptoms can include a burning pain when passing urine, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, abdominal tenderness, and sometimes blood in the urine.

  • Impetigo

    Age criteria: 2 months and older

    This highly contagious bacterial skin infection initially presents as red sores or blisters. While they can develop anywhere on the body, they most commonly appear on exposed areas like the face and hands.

  • Shingles

    Age criteria: 18 years and over

    Caused by the chickenpox virus, this infection creates a painful rash that typically appears as red blotches on just one side of the body. It usually starts with a painful or tingling sensation on the skin a few days before the rash develops.

  • Oral thrush

    Age criteria: 1 month and older

    Commonly seen in babies, this fungal (Candida) infection causes white, wipe-resistant patches in the mouth that may merge and turn yellow. For those who wear dentures, it often presents as redness and soreness underneath the dental plate.

  • Allergic Rhinitis & Allergic Conjunctivitis

    Age criteria: 2 Years and over

    Triggered by allergens, this inflammation of the nasal lining causes immediate cold-like symptoms, including sneezing, an itchy nose, and congestion or a runny nose.

  • Cold sores

    Age criteria: 1 month and over

    Cold sores are tiny, fluid-filled blisters on the face that are caused by the herpes simplex virus. The virus is very common, is spread by direct skin-to-skin contact and is highly infectious. Cold sores usually start with a tingling, itching or burning feeling.

  • Vulvovaginal thrush

    Age criteria: 16-60 years

    This common yeast infection causes itching and irritation around the vagina and vulva, alongside soreness and stinging during urination. It is typically accompanied by a white, odourless discharge that resembles cottage cheese.

  • You can simply walk-in to avail of a consultation, or if you prefer, you could pre-book an appointment at a time convenient for you!

  • Following a consultation, our pharmacist will provide advice and recommend a suitable treatment, which might include a course of antibiotics, if appropriate.

  • There is a €35 charge for the pharmacist consultation, where the pharmacist can prescribe medicine to treat your condition, if suitable.

    Prescribed medicines are eligible to be dispensed under the medical card and drug payment schemes as per usual.

  • Yes. If prescribed a medicine, you can choose to have it dispensed at another pharmacy.
